Our Fishing Guides

Fish's Fly & Sportfishing guides have extensive knowledge of the area and local fishing conditions, which gives you more fishing time on the water rather than looking time.

Fishing Guide - Alan Philliskirk with Permit This extensive local knowledge improves your potential for catching the trophy fish you have long dreamed of.

Alan (Fish) Philliskirk: The owner operator of Fish's Fly & Sportfishing and has over 20 years experience fishing the waters of the Gulf of Carpentaria. Growing up in Geelong in Victoria and fishing the wharves and jetties of Port Phillip bay and the coast from Point Lonsdale to Apollo bay and Portland. Becoming an avid flyfisherman in the mid eighties during a 14 yr stint on Groote Eylandt, winning a number of light tackle and flyfishing tournaments throughout the top end. Alan has spent the last 15 years guiding fishermen all over the Pacific from Fiji to Papua New Guinea and all over the top end of Australia.

Fishing Guide - Ben BrightBen (Notso) Bright: "Notso" grew up in Townsville, North Queensland and most of his early fishing involved tropical estuary and inshore species within range of a canoe and a baitcaster. He has a university degree in Aquaculture, but being born with a fishing chromosome, began working on boats in his last year of uni, as a deckie on a reef fishing charter boat out of Townsville. After a couple of years working in a tackle store, things progressed to game fishing where I crewed on the custom built game boat "Reel Chase", fishing the past 5 Cairns heavy tackle seasons as well as Townsville, the Gold Coast and Port Stephens. In love with the tropics he returned to Townsville and is now working with us in Weipa and at time of writing is just sitting for his Master 5.

Jason (Owey) Owens: "Owy grew up in south west Victoria catching Flathead and gar from the local jetties. He did an apprenticeship as a spray painter then ten years or so breeding show stud cattle. Jason spent some years fishing around lakes entrance, Malacoota, allthe way to Portland fishing for australian salmon and snapper. Getting the bug for fly fishing some 12 yrs ago. After spending rainy day's watching fishing video's he decided it was time to head north and headed to Weipa to see what all the fuss was about. He arrived in Weipa about 3 yrs ago and stayed getting a job night packing with Woolies so he could spend the day's fishing. Jason then aquired his coxwains ticket and has now started guiding with us. Although new to the guiding scene his knowledge of flyfishing and the Weipa area will be an asset to the team.

Lee (Leeroy) Hodges: The youngest member of the team now 20 sometimes called "Schmucko"Lee has been hanging around tackle shops and jetties almost since he could walk. Every afternoon around Cairns riding his pushbike to check what the local guides had caught that day. Not without experience for his age, he spent his school holiday's working for Greg Bethune on his mothership and did a season as a guide with Ross Fenn in the Archer river on "DeJaVu". Lee has also spent time in the Torres Straights working with cray divers. Lee started with us in 2007 has an infectious enthusiasm and a good instinct to find fish.

Duane (DJ) Jay: Now working for Rio Tinto is still doing a bit of giiding for us part time and has a reputation for finding fish when the going is tough. Duane has spent most of his time fishing the East Coast of Australia, until coming to Weipa. Duane has been with F.F.&S since 2000 and the longest serving guide, although now unfortunately part time. His skills will undoubtedly still be welcomed. Fishing Guide - Duane Jay

Fish's Fly & Sportfishing also utilize other local guides when dealing with larger fishing groups.
