NotsoFlying on the Flats

A couple of Permit trips yeilds 5 landed from 20 odd bites and many close encounters, mixed with a little bycatch.....
Dougal with the only Permit of his trip

Crikey the last 6 weeks has been a bit of a blur, I’m sure I’ve spent more nights in my swag somewhere in the bush or by a river than at home!  We’ve done a couple of trips of late targeting Permit on fly despite some of the worst dry season weathere we’ve had for years.  It’s a long day standing on the platform gazing across shallow flats in 30 knots with the occasional rain squall.  Permit are tough.  Hard to find at times, following no set pattern from one day to the next and most will not acknowlege, let alone look at your fly, except on no less than perfect presentations but that’s what makes them so much of a challenge.  Bycatch on the flats here are nice goldies off singrays and the odd good sized queenie with some great tuna and mackerel action not too far offshore when the wind eased.
