Fishing News

August 2002

Dirty water down the coast and a bit of swell toward the end of the month certainly didn't slow the fishing down, there was quite a bit of pelagic action out wide with large Queenies and Spanish mackeral.

Geoff Clark with 9kg longtailThe afternoon S/W wind tended to stir the water along the shoreline on the spring tides so these tides were used to chase barra up the rivers.

Only a few Longtails were about, and the few we found were a bit spooky to get near with a fly. Certainly different from the previous months although casting with lures from a distance proved fruitful on most occasions.

A number of times in the last few weeks I have encountered large schools of BIG giant trevallies. The kind that make you too nervous to cast to with hooks on, lunging their backs from the water to engulf the hookless popper teaser.

The barra's are just starting to show their presence along the beaches and the rocky headlands in the last week with few being caught for some reason, but many sighted.

Huge bait schools are working their way into the bay and hundreds of cormorants and pelicans filling up. You can just feel that it is all about to happen with the harbour blowing up with schools of longtails and queenfish.
