March 2003

Well 2003 has started with a bang and it is all happening, and if the first month is an indication we are looking at an incredible season.

Duane and his clients have had an amazing week at the end of March landing and releasing 6 barra over a metre and and 4 of these caught in one day.

Yep that's right 4 metre plus barra caught in one day. They also landed a lot of other good barra with at least 10 over 90cm and 15 over 80cm, an incredible week, in fact the best in memory.

The other species are also looking good with big bait schools showing up along the coast and plenty of predators. Large giant herrings and queenfish have been harrassing the bait and the longtail tuna are showing up also in numbers. Close in ther is plenty of jelly prawns and mant'as feeding on it, generally followed by a big enterage of Queenies and Golden trevally and the odd cobia.

I was fishing the beach with a couple of fly fishermen from the USA the other day and happened to spot something big and black swimming along in two feet of clear water. It turned out to be a 50lb plus spanish mackeral which turned to chase the clouser that was cast in it's path, but declined the fly, I assume because it was too small.

50lb GT While barra fishing in a couple of feet of water, a client cast a lure to a boil made by a large fish, and to his surprise connected to a 50lb giant trevally.

During Jan/Feb I spent 3 weeks in Mexico and Belize fishing for the elusive north american permit. I had a fantastic time over there which was all arranged by my mate Jack Samson. I ended up catching two permit which like the Australian species is just as difficult on a fly.

In Belize in particular we seen literally hundreds of permit but were extremely hard to get a bite out of. As I said I enjoyed the fishing, but how can you beat the fishery we have here. I just can't wait to get out there each day to see what is going to happen next.

If you can't make it stay tuned I will keep you posted.
