Bring on 2023

Welcome to our first newsletter for 2023

Firstly, on behalf of the Fish’s Fly and Sportfishing team we would like to thank everyone for their support in 2022. We had a very busy year running 4 guide boats with some notable captures from Permit, BB’s, Tuskies , Barramundi and all the usual species Cape York is famous for. The newsletter will be a monthly addition both on our website and email list and will keep anglers up to date on what’s biting, notable catches, latest discoveries, and techniques.

2022 was a season full of highs and lows. While there was plenty of amazing fishing, the La Nina that wreaked havoc all over Australia did much the same for us up here. Unseasonal weather events and above average swell and cloud for most of the winter months did make things hard at times, but our clients made it easy and enjoyable, and we made it work, having local guides and over 35 years of combined local knowledge was definitely an important factor in this.

The start of this wet season has been very good with above average rainfall, so this season is looking very promising, and when the weather permits our guides have been getting out to wet a line. The beaches have been loaded with jelly prawns when the weather patterns are right with Barra, Tarpon, Goldens, Cale Cales, Giant Herring and the rest of the Cape York favourites more than willing to play the game. The rivers have also fished well for Jacks, Black Jew, Fingermark, Threadies and

Barra too now the season is open.

As usual the Weipa fishing lodge has been turning it on with the meals, Shawn and Dave are the chefs, both 5 star and rotate shifts and offer 3 course evening meals, tailored to suit clients wishes and oversized breakfasts are the normal.

It's looking like it’ll be an awesome start to the season and all our guides are very excited to get back on the water. We have 2 new boats hitting the water in the next few months, a 6.5 metre custom hooker and a 6.1 metre Billfisher being added to the fleet and with all our existing boats being repowered last season with Honda and the new generation Tohatsu outboards it should be a smooth hassle-free season maintenance wise.

Our plan is to have a spare boat fueled up ready to go in case mechanical issues put a boat out of action, as well as an inventory of spare parts for existing vessels, We have limited spots available left for this season not to mention half of 2024 is booked out also, if you are looking to book in for a charter, get in touch asap to secure your spot.

Bring on 2023, we look forward to seeing all our clients back soon!
