Lates Calcarifer

A great fighting fish and a very highly prized target fish. Almost everyone that comes to North Queensland wants to catch a "barra".

Diagramma pictum

A sought after target for fly fishermen as they sometimes tail in shallow water and grub along in the sand looking for small crustaceans.

Eleutheronema tetradactylum

The Blue Salmons colour is silver bluish green in appearance along the back and flanks this progresses to a shiny silver white belly area. The Blue salmon differs from the King Salmon having shorter thread like filaments and only up to four which are located below the pectoral fins.

Rachycentron canadus

Many anglers rate cobia as one of the best fighters in the ocean, generally giving it their all right up until you get a firm hold on them. They can perform extraordinary runs at speed, but are best known and respected for their sheer doggedness. And they are first-class on the plate too.

Alectis indica

Elops hawaiensis

The Giant Herring can be recognised by its olive and silvery colour,slender body, relatively large mouth, single dorsal fin and strong forked tail. A spectacular fighting fish which can dazzle an angler with its speed and amazing jumps.

Gnathanodon speciosus

The “goldy” as it sometimes affectionately called is prolific along the Weipa shoreline. And sometimes showing up in large schools providing a fun target for both fly fishing and the conventional spinfisherman. Most of the bigger specimens however are taken jigging soft plastics or with live baits on the offshore reefs.

Megalops cyprinoids

Truthfully known as ox eye herring being of the same family of Megalops as the atlantic version “Megalops atlanticus” which grows to 300lb this little dynamite growing to about 5kg is no less worthy and will give an energetic airborne account of itself with many gill rattling jumps and shakes.

Caranx Ignobilis

The GT is a ferocious and dogged fighter and can grow to 200lb.In Weipa most of the GT’s caught are not quite that big however they are no less tenacious and will certainly pull your string.

Polydactylus macrochir

Or sometimes called threadfin salmon found in all of Weipa’s Albatross bay rivers are great fun on a rod and provide some exciting arial acrobatics and a nice feed back at the fishing lodge as they are possibly one of the top 5 table fish available around Weipa.

Trachinotus blochi

Are quite prolific along the coastline around Weipa and are prized as a flyrod target. They can be quite difficult and sometimes frustrate the angler with their unwillingness to eat the fly. Conditions need to be right but they are a very catchable quarry for a good angler.

Lutjanus argentimaculatus

As with the other well known Lutjanid species the fingermark (Lutjanis johnii) we catch around Weipa and Cape York, these species prefer dense cover and will keep you on your toes as they have a tendency to grab the lure or fly as they are returning to that cover. Your reflexes had better be quick.

Scomberoides commersonnianus

A very exciting sportfish and what tropical fishing is all about. The queenie grows to over 20kg provides a heap of fun for all that hook them. One of our most abudant species both along the shore and offshore they pull hard and jump and do all the things that a great sportfish are expected to do.

Thunnus tonggol

Previously called northern bluefin tuna, longtails are one of the most prolific species in the area during April – July and one of the most sought after sport fishing targets due to their speed and their willingness to take a lure or fly. The longtail is warm blooded like most tunas and has speed and energy to burn.

Scomberomorus commerson

Fast and furious this high speed predator will peel off line in seconds with its blistering pace. Don’t get in the way of those teeth either, they can cut through flesh like a razor blade. 

Spaniards are here all year round, however, they are more prevalent inshore in the winter months.

Chanos chanos

Considered one of the most challenging species to catch on a fly rod the milky is not only very difficult to tempt with a fly as it has such a diverse diet, including plankton but is also an awesomely powerful sportfish.
